Violet

Violet is a sandstone in reddish and violet tones. Its petrographic study classifies it as a quartz arenite, a sandstone made up almost entirely of quartz grains. It comes from Rubio Natural Stone's own quarry.

The Violet data sheet, dated January 2026, gives a water absorption of 1.0% by weight (EN 13755) and an open porosity of 3.7%, which is the volume of voids that water can reach. Strength is measured in megapascals (MPa), and the higher the figure, the more load the stone takes. After 56 freeze-thaw cycles, the data sheet gives a compressive strength of 206 MPa, against an initial 211 MPa, and a flexural strength of 12.7 MPa. Initial flexural strength is reported in two directions, 19.1 MPa with the load perpendicular to the bedding and 14.0 MPa with the load parallel to it, and the data sheet does not say which of the two the post-frost value corresponds to.

We recommend Violet for paving and cladding where high strength is needed. Its compressive strength is 211 MPa, the highest in the range, and in the abrasion test it leaves an 18.0 mm groove (the smaller, the more wear-resistant). For facades, the data sheet gives an anchor breaking load of 1,900 N. Around pools it suits heavy-use projects, in a flamed finish. In the pendulum test, where a higher value means more grip, the data sheet gives 78, without stating the finish tested.

The 2026 catalogue lists five finishes for Violet: sawn, honed, brushed, fine bush-hammered and flamed. Flaming, a rough finish produced by thermal shock, is done only on the two hardest sandstones in the range, Violet and Northcliff Blue.
