Clara

Clara is a light beige calcareous sandstone with a very fine, compact grain. Its petrographic study classifies it as a calcarenite, that is, a rock made of sand-sized calcareous grains. It is extracted in large blocks from Rubio Natural Stone's own quarry.

The Clara data sheet gives an open porosity of 12.5%, the volume of voids that water can reach, and does not include water absorption. After 56 freeze-thaw cycles, flexural strength goes from 9.7 to 9.3 MPa (megapascals; the higher the figure, the more load the stone takes).

We recommend Clara for ventilated facades, cladding in restoration work, large-format paving and setts. On facades it is in the Leonardo Hotel Zürich Airport (Zurich, 2022), the Obra Cremon building in Hamburg (2020) and the Meliá Bin Shamikh hotel in Doha (2015), and its data sheet gives an anchor breaking load of 850 N. Around pools it is an option for residential use in a Mediterranean climate. The pendulum, the test that measures how much grip the surface gives, reads 96 dry and 82 wet, and a higher value means more grip.

The 2026 catalogue lists ten finishes for Clara: sawn, honed, sandblasted, bush-hammered (also fine and coarse), brushed, chiselled, split and the Rubio's Special family. Honed is the finish documented on site, at the Meliá Bin Shamikh hotel, and the catalogue also shows mouldings, capitals and balusters carved in Clara. Clara is not flamed: that finish is listed only for Violet and Northcliff Blue.
