Sunstone

Sunstone is a medium-grained calcareous sandstone with pinkish and yellowish tones. Its petrographic study classifies it as a calcarenite, which is a rock made of sand-sized calcareous grains. It comes from Rubio Natural Stone's own quarry.

The Sunstone data sheet puts open porosity, the volume of voids that water can reach, at 12.6% and gives no water absorption. In the frost test, after 56 freeze-thaw cycles, flexural strength stands at 7.9 MPa; the initial value is 8.5 MPa. The unit is the megapascal: the higher the figure, the more load the stone takes.

We recommend Sunstone above all for restoration and heritage conservation, because of its visual continuity with historic surfaces. Its test values are the same as those of Duna and Perla, so the choice between the three is one of colour. They also share the result of the pendulum, the surface grip test: 94 dry and 78 wet, on a scale where a higher value means more grip.

The 2026 catalogue lists ten finishes for Sunstone: sawn, honed, sandblasted, bush-hammered (also fine and coarse), brushed, chiselled, split and the Rubio's Special family. For restoration work, the catalogue highlights the chiselled and split finishes. Sunstone is not flamed: that finish is listed only for Violet and Northcliff Blue.
