Portland Stone alternative: Nivis limestone
Portland is Britain’s institutional limestone: St Paul’s Cathedral, the Cenotaph and the British Museum are built with it. Precisely because of that, specifying it today carries two real frictions: a market with very few producers and premium facade cost. Only two producers extract genuine Portland today, under regulated extraction (underground mining due to the protected Jurassic Coast setting) and made-to-order fabrication. It is a premium material with finite permitted reserves, and as traditional facade stone its cost per m² is among the highest in the UK market.
