Indian sandstone alternative: European own-quarry stone
Indian sandstone dominates British paving on price, and this page does not set out to argue with that. It is written for a different kind of project: one that has lived with batches that do not match, ±5 mm calibration or rust staining months in, and one that needs to answer for where every pallet comes from. Our alternative is stone from our own quarries in Spain, cut and calibrated in our own factory, with the same origin from the first pallet to the last.

It is the dominant low-cost option in British paving. Its friction is structural: quality and colour depend on the source mine and on each container’s batch, standard calibration works to tolerances of up to ±5 mm, delamination and iron staining are known issues of the material, and sea transit runs around 6 weeks. Verifying supply-chain traceability back to the quarry is, in practice, very difficult.

If your project’s only criterion is price, calibrated Indian sandstone is unbeatable. Our alternative is for projects where a second batch that does not match, a slab delaminating after two winters, or a supply-chain audit cost more than the price difference. And if you do buy Indian sandstone, buy it well: demand batch testing and documented ethical certification.
Why batch consistency matters
A well-selected batch of Kandla Grey can test very well: there are batch CE sheets showing 0.8% absorption and 23.7 MPa flexural strength. The difficulty is variability: the stone comes from hundreds of different mines, two slabs from the same block can differ in iron content (the origin of rust staining), delamination depends on the source mine, and the colour of an extension depends on which container comes in. Buying good Indian sandstone is possible; the hard part is guaranteeing that every batch in your project is good. Our answer is one of process: a single origin and control from start to finish.
Traceability: from the quarry to your site
In natural stone, real traceability means being able to answer which quarry the material comes from, under what conditions it is extracted and who processes it. In long import chains that verification is difficult and rests on third-party certifications: if your project requires them, always ask for them documented per batch. Our answer is structural: our own quarries in Spain and the full process at our Les Borges Blanques facilities, with quarry visits open to any client. Traceability is not a badge on a brochure: it is that you can come and see where your stone comes from.

Which Rubio stone replaces which Indian colour?
Quick guide: for the greys (Kandla Grey) the natural path is Northcliff Blue, a blue-grey; for the warm tones (Raj Green, Autumn Brown, Modak) look at Rustic, grey with golden nuances. The rest of our sandstones (Clara, Duna, Perla) cover the beige-cream range. It is decided with samples, which we send free to professionals.
How much more expensive is European stone?
It depends on format, thickness and volume, so we do not publish a generic multiplier. Often value engineering (matching format and thickness to actual use) closes the gap more than expected. Ask us for a quotation with your measurements and see it in real numbers.
Do you supply the UK and Ireland?
